Conan O'Brien and Me

This Thursday, 5/3/07, I was able to get the hell out of the office (I love the office, mind you, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and get out of the office, werd), and go see Conan O'Brien. I happen to think the world of his show, and it was a dream to me to be able to see him and his show come to SF.

I honestly didn't think I was going to get a ticket (two, actually). i am that person who enters stuff and doesn't get shit. Or at the very least I get things like spam after signing up for stuff, I'm such a sucker. But I scored two tickets to go to the show. I took a personal day and so did the Mango in order to see Conan. First things first, there's the issue of trying to get out of the hood into the other hood (Tenderloin district), but we remedied that by parking at my office and taking the bus down to Civic Center. I haven't taken a bus in an awfully long time, and I don't think Mango had the bus bug for a while, so that's always interesting. I sort of miss that randomness of riding a bus and seeing an interesting cross-section of the City. College kids, business folks, hoodrats, drunk guys serenading the whole bus (he was in a rough patch, shall we say, drunk and out of his mind at about 5PM). But we get to the Civic Center and there's a line already, say of about 150 people. It's nine-thirty AM, and we like little kids, we had our breakfast/lunches in bags, ready to consume for what was about a 5 hour wait in line.

Thankfully we did have the food because it would have meant one of us leaving the line and going to seek out food. We wound up having too much food actually and I wound up giving some of it away to some stoner kids and, my brush with greatness, I gave a snickers bar and some raisins to the one and only Frank Chu, the dude with the sign about the 12 galaxies! pretty awesome!

But yes, the wait was about five hours. Mango wound up falling asleep, and when he was awake, he would hum the Conan O'Brien theme song. To make a long story short, there were some pretty old school Conan fans in line with us, and everyone was pretty cool. There are fans from Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and all over the place. It's interesting. Also interesting are the people who walk in front of us while we're waiting in line. People smoking dank, five cops doing nothing about it. Illegal u-turns on Market Street.

There's also something to be said about a crowd that just won't shut the hell up when the dude is trying to speak. Anyways, we are let in Southwest Airlines style. Cattle call time. We stand in a little confusion and then all of a sudden people are literally running for their seats. Mango and I stop for a minute and try to figure out where to sit and we lose out on getting closer to the front like we anticipated. We instead get row 7 from the front. Not too shabby.

The guests are Patton Oswalt (fucking hilarious), Randy Jackson (ass-kisser, but I like Journey, so I can't trip), and Max Weinberg and his band are amazing. There was a frisbee golf champ there, and he KILLED. The crowd was SO rowdy. I loved it. Screaming the whole time, I laughed hard and had a good experience. You can see us if you look for us on the replay too. I'm sad there was no Triumph the Comedy Insult dog, but you can't have it all.

Mango and I are planning to go to New York and see him there too. Tell you about it when we get there!

I am now moving onto non-fiction month, and I am ready to do more writing. I'm here at work today for some students who are taking a test to graduate from school, and they are doing well so far. Also, I'm here to do some work. I do better when I'm out of my element, I suppose. It's easy to write at home, but i do more work when I'm forced to, and the TV's not on. My ADD doesn't kick in.

Have a good weekend, kids! :-) Take care and be happy!

Patton Oswalt is a very sweet person and I am glad his dream of stardom has come true. When he did local standup, he would come into the PacBell Office in the Mission all the time to pay his bill :)
