I had to read that twice to understand. Initially, I agreed. Now that I think about it more, it's more than the face that gives meaning, it's also intonation, volume, and gestures. For the same reason words on a page sometimes don't do justice since the intended meaning, hence the soul, is lost if proper words aren't used. I would agree though if the quote above was qualified to say, "well written words on a page..."
